“Most people spend their lives building someone else’s dream. I want you to build your dream. I want you to find your work. You have something to do in this world that only you can do. I know you are seeking fulfillment, and I’m on a mission to help you find it.” — Cathy Heller
Don’t Keep Your Day Job
When I came across this quote from Cathy Heller, it stopped me in my tracks. So many of us go through life building someone else’s dream—working tirelessly to check off society’s boxes, to meet expectations, and to fulfill roles that don’t light a fire in our hearts. But what if we spent that time and energy building our dreams instead?
As followers of Christ, we are called to live abundant lives, and that means seeking fulfillment and purpose in everything we do. Jesus promised us life in abundance—not just getting by, not just surviving, but thriving, growing, and fully living out our purpose. He has given each of us unique gifts and callings to make a difference in this world. What if we pursued those callings with passion and intention, trusting that He has equipped us for our specific purpose?
Why Finding Your Work Matters
Fulfillment isn’t just a bonus; it’s a necessity for living a truly abundant life. If you’re like me, you know that our work and our dreams are part of our legacy, something only we can uniquely contribute to the world. And building that legacy means pursuing work that aligns with our values, our truest selves, and our faith in Him.
Imagine waking up every day filled with purpose, knowing that your work is your own and that it truly matters. That’s the kind of life Cathy Heller is talking about—and that’s what I want for each one of you.
Three Steps to Building Your Dream
1. Listen to Your Heart
It sounds simple, but truly listening to your heart can be the hardest part. What do you feel called to do? What lights you up? The dream doesn’t have to be grand, and it doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It just has to be yours and align with who God created you to be.
2. Take One Brave Step
If you feel a tug to start something new—whether it’s a side business, a creative project, or an entirely new career—take one brave step in that direction. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but it does need to be intentional. That first step might be a small one, like setting aside ten minutes a day for your dream, but each step moves you closer to living out God’s purpose for your life.
3. Surround Yourself with People Who Believe in You
Pursuing your own dream is often easier when you’re around others who are doing the same. Seek out a supportive community that shares your values and encourages you to grow. Having people who remind you that your work matters can make all the difference. We are, after all, the body of Christ—meant to encourage and support one another.
Now would be a nice time to plug my email list, to join the Living Her Legacy community??
For the Mamas with Big Dreams
To all the moms reading this, I want you to know that it’s okay to have dreams of your own. In fact, you should. As you step boldly toward your calling, you’re not only showing your children what it looks like to live with purpose, but you’re also glorifying God by using the talents He’s placed in you. You’re showing them what it looks like to pursue a life that is abundant and aligned with God’s unique purpose for you.
So today, make a decision to stop building someone else’s dream and start building your own. Take Cathy’s words to heart: “You have something to do in this world that only you can do.” Let’s step into that calling and make it happen together.

“My love for planning and logistics started when scheduling my college courses around two jobs. As a working mama of 3 children, my passion has evolved to a necessary tool to maximize my time and efficiency.
My goal is to help busy parents seek Christ first and live the abundant life described in John 10:10. Whether it’s spending more time with their children, traveling, or starting their own business, I want to provide simple, actionable steps to provide parents more time to do what they want most, without sacrificing themselves along the way.
Don’t just leave a legacy, LIVE ONE.”
